Getting there: From Chania, it's approximately 76km (1.5 hours by car). The road is well-maintained but winding, offering spectacular views. We recommend leaving early to avoid crowds and secure parking.

Tip: Wade across the shallow lagoon to reach the small island for even more secluded spots.

2. Balos Lagoon

The iconic lagoon of Balos, with its white sand and Caribbean-blue waters, is a must-visit. The shallow waters and dramatic scenery make it a photographer's paradise.

Getting there: Drive to Kissamos (about 40km from Chania) and then continue to the Balos parking area. From there, it's a 20-minute hike down to the beach. Alternatively, take a boat from Kissamos port.

Tip: Bring water and sunscreen - there's limited shade and no facilities on the beach itself.

3. Falassarna Beach

One of the best sunset beaches in Crete, Falassarna offers wide stretches of golden sand and excellent swimming conditions. The beach is less crowded than Elafonisi or Balos, making it perfect for those seeking a more relaxed experience.

Getting there: About 52km from Chania (50 minutes by car). The road is good and parking is available near the beach.

Tip: Stay for sunset - it's considered one of the best in Greece.

4. Seitan Limania

This dramatic cove is shaped like a lightning bolt, with steep cliffs surrounding crystal-clear waters. It's smaller and more intimate than the other beaches, but incredibly photogenic.

Getting there: About 22km from Chania. The final descent to the beach is steep and requires a 15-minute hike. Not recommended for those with mobility issues.

Tip: Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture the best light for photos.

5. Kedrodasos Beach

Just 1km from Elafonisi but far less visited, Kedrodasos is a wild, natural beach surrounded by juniper trees. The setting feels untouched and remote.

Getting there: Park at the Elafonisi parking area and walk about 20 minutes along the coastal path, or take the rough dirt road if you have a suitable vehicle.
