Manual cars: cheaper, but more work
Manual (stick-shift) cars are traditionally the cheapest option in Greece and still make up much of the local fleet. If you drive a manual at home, you'll feel right at home here too.
- Pros: lowest rental price, slightly better fuel economy, more choice in the economy class.
- Cons: constant gear-changing on mountain switchbacks and in town traffic; tiring if you're not used to it; hill-starts on steep village lanes can be stressful.
Automatic cars: relaxed, ideal for the mountains
Automatics have become far more common and are the stress-free choice for most visitors — especially on the climbs to villages like the Lasithi plateau or the road into Sfakia.
- Pros: no clutch, no stalling, far more relaxed on hills and in traffic; lets you focus on the scenery; the hybrids and the Tesla are all automatic.
- Cons: a little more expensive; marginally higher fuel use on older models (modern hybrids reverse this).
Which should you choose for Crete?
Our honest advice: if you don't drive a manual most weeks at home, choose automatic. Crete's roads have plenty of steep gradients, hairpins and narrow village streets where an automatic removes a lot of stress — and lets you actually enjoy the views. If you're a confident manual driver on a tight budget, a manual economy car is perfectly fine and a little cheaper.
