We rent cars for a living, so take this with a pinch of salt — but we'll be honest: not everyone needs a car in Crete every single day. Here's a straight answer to help you decide, based on what our guests actually do.
When you can manage without a car
- City-only breaks. Chania and Rethymno old towns are walkable and beautiful — for a few days of harbour strolls and tavernas, you don't strictly need a car.
- All-inclusive resort stays where you barely leave the hotel and pool.
- One or two big sights reachable by the occasional organised tour or bus (e.g. a single day trip to Knossos or a Samaria coach excursion).
Crete does have a decent intercity bus network (KTEL) along the north coast between the main towns, which covers the basics.
When you really do need a car
This is most visitors. The moment you want to see the real Crete, a car stops being optional:
- The best beaches. Elafonissi, Falassarna, Balos, the south-coast bays — poorly served by buses and far better early, before the tour crowds.
- Mountain villages & gorges where buses run once a day or not at all.

Car vs taxis vs tours — the cost reality
For two or more people over several days, a rental car is usually cheaper and far more flexible than stacking up taxis or daily coach tours — and you go where you want, when you want. Our rentals include unlimited kilometres and no hidden fees, so the price you book is the price you drive.
