Crete has one of the longest seasons in Greece — you can comfortably visit from April to October, and even winter has its charms. The "best" time depends on what you want: empty beaches and low prices, peak summer heat, or spring wildflowers. Here's a season-by-season guide, with a note on car rental.
Spring (April–June): our favourite
Mild temperatures, green hillsides bursting with wildflowers, quiet beaches, and the gorges (including Samaria) opening up. The sea warms through June. Car rental is cheaper than peak summer and availability is wide — an ideal time for a road trip.
Summer (July–August): peak everything
Hot, busy and buzzing. The beaches are at their best for swimming, but the famous spots (Balos, Elafonisi) get crowded and hot. This is peak season for car rental too, so book early — cars genuinely sell out, and prices are highest.
Autumn (September–October): the sweet spot
Arguably the best all-round time: the sea is at its warmest after a summer of sun, the crowds thin out, prices drop, and the light is beautiful. Late October starts to cool and some seasonal businesses wind down.
Winter (November–March): quiet and authentic
Green, mild on the coast (with snow on the mountains), and very local. Many resorts are closed, but Chania and the bigger towns stay lively. A car is essential as bus services thin out.
When is car rental cheapest?
Spring and autumn — the "shoulder" seasons — offer the best combination of good weather, low crowds and lower rental prices. July and August are the most expensive and the most likely to sell out, so if you travel then, reserve as far ahead as you can. Check our current special offers for the best rates.
